Le Tissage du Ballet
Acrylic/Collages

"Le Tissage du Ballet reflects my ongoing love for the ballet as subject and acrylic/collage as medium. In this exhibition, I am more concerned with the story/history of the ballet than with the actual dancers on stage, using romantic and emotional small canvasses, laced with strong compositional designs to tell my stories. The use of exotic scraps of fabric from my wife’s dressmaking studio give texture and colour to the works in much the way stage sets and designs support the stage performance. Primarily I am a painter of figures – dancers, acrobats and such, wrapped in this case in the mythology accompanying the ballets.
The Tissage in the title of the collection, suggested by a friend in Paris, literally means the weft, when referring to material, and also means the framework of a novel play etc., and using the French acknowledges the original French titles of many of the classical ballets."
